M.Sc. Environmental Science with specialization in Environmental Forensics Being an emerging economy, in India there is enormous demand & futuristic needs for trained human resource and experts who are capable to deal with monitoring and analysis of environmental pollution, treatment of pollution, and assessment of environmental impacts of various development projects such as industries, mining, urbanization etc. With this perspective, M.Sc. Environmental Science course offered at School of Pharmacy, NFSU has been intended with a curriculum covering wide array of environmental aspects with emphasis on research to solve environmental problems. Solving the pressing environmental problems, typically involve social, political and economic aspects which the environmental professional must be aware of. Also with emergence of stringent ‘Environmental Legislations’ all over the globe, new academic branch of Environmental Forensic is now advent by various renowned universities at abroad.
In India, NFSU is the first and only university offering specialization in this forthcoming area of Environmental Forensics which provides a novel opportunity by enabling students to critically evaluate issues related to environmental governance, law and sustainability, trained for efficient environmental decision-making and management, management systems.
Scope and opportunity of Environmental Science and Environmental Forensics:
Environmental Science is a scientific study dealing with patterns and processes in the natural world and how human activities can impact the global environment, which is a very much ‘interdisciplinary’ subject which enables students to deal with environmental problems and their associated solutions by providing combine skills and knowledge from a variety of different fields such as various branches of biology, chemistry, physics, geography, earth and marine sciences, and also social sciences. Conservation of environment which meant little as a political and social issue earlier now became a burning issue that came to sharp focus among scientists, technocrats, educationists, and governments, also the public in general became conscious about environmental conservation. This is why the dedicated study of environmental science is so important and one of the attractive & lucrative field for carrier.
Entrenched with ‘Polluter Pay Principle’, Environmental forensic is all about the identification of polluter(s), providing required scientific/technical framework for allocating the responsibility, to support legal regime assigning legal and financial responsibility. Emerged in last decades of 20th century, Environmental forensic has now a separate and well established field of scientific study dealing with environmental crimes and contamination events. Basically, very strict evidentiary requirements for criminal convictions often resulted in polluters walking out free without being punished. This resulted in the formation of National Green Tribunal Act, 2010. The Act established a tribunal only for environmental cases where the aggrieved can approach for unfair means in the form of compensation as if in a civil court. Provisions of the National Tribunal Act, 2010 opened a new field for standard protocol for environmental forensic investigations that can help to improve the situation further for environmental forensics in India.
- The course’s objective is improve expertise, prepare aspirants for global competence for career options in education, research, industries, consultancy etc., as well as for designing, conducting independent research in the area of their interest. Emphasis provided for research and students has to spent fair amount of time in the laboratory, learning how to carry out different types of tests and analysis which provides valuable experience to prepare them for future.
- The School has well established laboratory with all necessary facility for advanced environmental monitoring including Repairable Dust Sampler, P.M. 2.5 Sampler, Independent Gaseous sampler, Stack Emission Monitoring Kit, Sound Level Meter, B.O.D. Incubator, C.O.D Digester, TOC analyzer, TN analyzer, Flame photometer, Nephelometer, Soil sampling and testing facility, Photo-reactor for pollutant treatment etc. Students opting this courses will be trained for modern methods of analysis, handling sophisticated analytical instruments like HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Visible NIR Spectroscopy, Raman spectrophotometer, Gel electrophoresis apart from routing Environmental Analysis.
