Over the decades, conventional forensic science has contributed greatly to the society by creating human resource having an inclusive exposure of physical, chemical, biological, and allied sciences. In present world, where skilled manpower in specialized domain of every branch of science is inevitable, forensic science is not an exception. It is thus imperative to create specialized pool of talents in different branches of forensic science including biology and biotechnology. Biotechnology, a highly interdisciplinary branch of biological science has revolutionized the world with its extraordinary potential. Witnessing the recent advancements in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, and their potential to help in criminal investigations, it is the need of the hour to produce forensic experts having adequate skills in modern biotechnological techniques to support criminal justice delivery system by analyzing the biological evidences, imparting training and promoting contemporary research.
Application of biotechnological tools and techniques has also revolutionized the forensic investigation by analyzing the bodily substances as evidences. Ranging from serological test to DNA profiling, application of modern biology and biotechnology has changed the scenario of criminal investigation owing to its robustness and precision. Looking into the cases received for analysis and lack of dedicated forensic experts in this domain, Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU) is commencing a new course of M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology from academic year 2020-2021.
The two year (4 semesters) M.Sc. program in Forensic Biotechnology is aimed to develop the specialized pool of human resource, having the exposure to the modern biotechnological disciplines like DNA technology and Profiling, Forensic Proteomics, Wildlife Forensic and others, to support the criminal investigation in scientific and specific manner. Apart from generating technologically competent experts for criminal investigation and forensic research, course curriculum of M.Sc. Forensic Biotechnology would also ensure to generate qualified professionals for various government and private sectors like forensic laboratories, biotech companies, pharmaceutical, chemical, nutritional, and other related industries.
2 Years (4 Semesters)
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry/Biology/ Environmental Sciences/ Biochemistry/ Biotechnology /Forensic Sciences/ Medicine/ Pharmacy/ Agriculture Sciences with at least 55% for General/OBC (NCL)/EWS category candidates, and 50% or equivalent for SC/ST and PwD category candidates.
