Forensic Science in general is being perceived to be associated only with the criminal investigations, identification of the offenders and is also known to play a vital role in the criminal justice delivery system. But there also exists a compassionate form of this forensic science that has emerged most recently is Humanitarian Forensics. By the terminology itself, it can be understood as an exclusive expertise associated with the humanitarian services or actions.
In every instance of social service, there is a scope of fulfilling the general needs of the society. But Humanitarian Forensics deals with the scientific approaches with the comprehensive management of the disaster victims. This involves rendering comprehensive and prudent management of the victims with the psycho social, socio cultural, health care, scientific identification and social security aspects.
In the contemporary world, humanity has been witnessing lot many scientific advancements beyond anybody’s guess. But still there are certain things found to be unpredictable especially the mass disasters. Mass disasters are of any kind such as natural and manmade origin. These may result in huge loss of lives. i.e., there may be a huge mortality and morbidity. These unpleasant or unlikely situations require consorted efforts for the effective tackling of the crisis with a mandatory compassionate humanitarian action that is essential. In such condition there is a necessity of the locating, identifying the dead victims, rendering the critical health care to the victims those are affected with morbidity, providing reassurance to the victims and their relatives, dignified management of the dead victims and the rituals with their respective cultural context.
Combined efforts of the forensic expertise are essential for the identification of the victims as it is crucial information for the socio cultural aspects, demographic profiles and the social security applications. This requires an authentic source of information through flawless and reliable /foolproof scientific methods. This could be achieved only through the forensic sciences wherein the scrupulous techniques are applied for the authenticity of information about the determination of the individuality or identification profiling. This is useful in rendering the due financial and social assistance that is being dispersed and rendered by the respective governments. Population data for the updates are also made with more accuracy and reliability. Thereby humanitarian forensics is useful in carrying out the systematic management of the disasters and any other situation that ends up in the distress among the mankind in large numbers.
Allaying the grief , pain and emotional and physical trauma sustained by the specific group of population, with a distinct traits of empathy, compassion, and solace is the hallmark of humanitarian forensics.
